Don't Get Scammed!
Phishing, an increasingly popular form of ID theft, has replaced garbage
can rip-offs as the preferred method for ID thieves to steal your personal
information. In Phishing, an e-mail instructs the recipient to click an electronic
link to confirm personal information, but the link is connected to a bogus site
where the information is then stolen.
The e-mail messages appear to come from legitimate businesses one might
have dealings with - banks, online retailers, Internet providers, insurance
agencies, and online organizations such as eBay and PayPal. The messages often
look authentic, featuring corporate logos and formats similar to the ones used
for legitimate messages. They typically ask for verification of account numbers
and passwords, allegedly for auditing purposes. Because these e-mails look
official, up to 20% of unsuspecting recipients respond to them, resulting in
financial losses, identity theft and other fraudulent activity.
A Step Beyond Phishing
And now these thieves have developed a new tool: vishing, short for voice
phishing. Internet users are told to call a phone number where an automated
answering service asks for account information. Sometimes vishing comes as a
call out of the blue in which the caller already knows the recipient's credit card
number and asks for the three-digit security code on the back of the card.
Use Your Head!
Common sense is your best defense. Don't open any e-mails from sources you
don't recognize; instead, delete them immediately. And if you get a phone call
asking you to provide or confirm any of your personal information, hang up
and call your lender, using the number on the back of the credit card. That's a
legitimate number and you can be sure it's secure.
